Annoying

Top Bird

So, in the past couple of days this image: sta.sh/01cid5kl7n01 has been stolen on almost every social media platform known to man (exaggeration).  I have found it on twitter, tumblr, facebook, weheartit, pinterest, FA, and a few other places...in some places it has over 50K likes/views.
Now, I am not here to bitch and moan about copyright laws.  It is illegal to steal artwork without proper credits; however, I do put myself at risk by not watermarking everything.

My main motivation for writing this is to ask for some help, and to clarify some things.

I am only on the following platforms: dA (obviously), facebook, tumblr (though I never use that), and youtube.  I only post regularly to dA and facebook. If you see my artwork ANYWHERE else, that is not me posting, and it is more than likely an illegal posting.  The exception is if proper credits are given.
And that is really all I ask for.  If someone is going to repost my work, just please give proper credits? I do my best to watermark things that are probably going to be stolen, but in the end, a watermark can be cropped off or edited out.  A link back to my facebook or dA is really all I ask for :)

I know everyone here is sensitive to copyright laws <3 We're all artists after all! Sometimes when you see stolen work, it can be helpful to remind the 'offender' of copyright laws :) Sometimes the person who is reposting work does not realize that what they are doing is wrong.

I always appreciate an a note if you see my work posted anywhere illegally!

Thank you very much!
-Lucky

If you'd rather not have a massive watermark on your stuff, an alternative is signing it in an obvious place where it can't be cropped out.

That's so sad!! Do you need someone to make you a watermark? It literally takes a few minutes, and I love your work so much I would make one for you!

>.< I luckily haven't gotten that yet from what I can tell, but I have found quite a few of my own on tumblr and pinterest and I don't use/have those. They're luckily credited, but blah, you know? :/

I think you should definitely start watermarking. :(

man that sucks that you are not getting any credit. When you see it anywhere else don't you claim that it is yours :?

Yeah it sucks...haha I just need to start watermarking.

I try to...the problem is that the times I really care about art theft is when it is in a facebook group or something with over 10K likes. People tend to ignore one comment out of 100s or the admin blocks my complaint. It can be really difficult to handle art theft on facebook, especially since the site makes it so hard to file a complaint.

Yeah, I've seen that piece of art on a big group on Facebook. They posted it up as one of the pictures and said "Like if this is amazing" but gave no credit to you. I don't know where it went but if i come across it I will report it. It is a very nice piece of art as well. Hope things get better copyright ways <3

One of an artists most annoying problems to deal with, copyright and theft.

I wish you luck on your watermark, your art is really truly amazing, and should be always credited to you.
If I ever come across your unique art, and it's not posted by you, or credited to you, I'll be sure to tell the poster to either remove or I'll send them a link to your dA for them to put with the post.

I got your back! ^^

I'll keep an eye out! Sadly, I've seen so much stolen work, or work posted improperly on other sites over the past few years.... And a majority of the time, the offenders I confront do it on purpose. They are aware of what they are doing and do not care. It's very sad that such things happen. :( Especially after that news about the new possible legislation in the UK, allowing such things to be legal....

It's such a shame that people are just taking your beautiful art, but I think you should add a watermark if it comes to it.

Yeah...it sucks to have to watermark, but I think I just need to start sticking one on everything (at least in the corner). I just hate when stuff like this 'escapes' and goes viral without any credits >.<

That's a shame ;n; I'm so sorry. But when it doubt, stick an ugly watermark on it. you gave people your trust and they took advantage of it therefore they don't have the right to a clear, beautiful image~ At least...that's what I do

Oh my gosh, that's terrible D:

Maybe try to limit the damage by replacing the image with a watermarked one? and contacting the owners of the pages it's been shared on to get them to either remove your picture or add a credit to you?

Kids on Facebook are so ignorant about art, they probably don't understand that sharing your image without crediting you is illegal. They probably just want to share the pretty picture they found :/
Still infuriating though.

Yeah, it's really annoying, and sadly since it has already gone viral, a watermark won't do too much at this point. :( If nothing else, at least this is a learning experience :D
Kids can be really uneducated when it comes to copyright laws

I'm sorry too. Sadly, it's not just "kids." You wouldn't believe the number of adult professionals I know who assume they can just go on the internet and use whatever image they please, or repost artworks all over the place without credit. If you want, I'll post a link to your journal on my blog and facebook accounts letting people know that if they see the painting, it's yours...?
