Hey guys! I don't usually push causes and things on people, but I thought this was important enough to share with you all, as it is something that effects the art community as a whole.  The UK government recently pushed legislation through parliament that essentially legalizes art theft from the internet.

:iconseasonaldragon1: has brought this issue to my attention.  Here is an excerpt from a note she wrote to me:

"I was wondering if you could help raise awareness.

The UK government has passed new legislation making it legal for images to basically be taken off the internet and be resold and reused without recognition or payment of the            original artist.

There is a government e-petition against this, and I would be extremely grateful if you could raise awareness of this amongst your watchers in the UK.

The situation is explained better on the petition page.
(Link to the petition: www.deviantart.com/users/outgo… )

As many people need to know about this as possible, and sign the petition to get this government decision overturned.

Thank you for your time,
Season (Rebecca Higgins)"

This isn't just something that effects the UK, this decision effects ALL OF US.  What kind of message are we sending as artists if we sit back and let legislation like this get passed?
Anyway, I hope you will take some time to read up on this issue and perhaps sign the e-petition if you are a UK resident.  Sadly only UK residents can sign the petition, but it is still a good idea to be informed about such issues.

Thank you :)
Lucky

Thank you for the tip-off, I'm British and hadn't got a clue about it! The petition is now signed and spread all over facebook! Yet another one of our crackpot Governments ideas! I know it is making a lot of people who can't sign the petition angry, but please, don't blame the British people, most of us don't agree with the stupid ideas our Government come up with, there has been so many of them recently :angered:

I know its a long-shot but maybe if people outside the UK inundated the Government with e-mails telling them how you feel, maybe Cameron will do another of his famous u-turns! :fork:

And no worries, I definitely don't blame you guys! The US government has a lot of asinine ideas that a lot of us don't agree with XD

So basically people in the UK can sell my art without my permission even though I live in the US, and I'm not allowed to have a say?

If your work has been shared somewhere and it is not clear who the original artist is, then potentially yes.
It's ridiculous, I know. That's why as many UK artists as possible need to sign the petition to get rid of this legislation.

That's terrible! Who in their right mind would try to pass such a harmful law. I don't see any upsides and i'm sure plenty of you are with me that it's a big problem that theft is being promoted. No obvious logic has been put into any of this non-sense. This is offending to me, and most likely a lot of artists around the world no matter if they live in the UK or not.

*shock*

Thanks Lucky for bringing this to our attention!

This is horrifying. While I do not live in the UK, this shocks and upsets me greatly. Why would anyone allow such a thing to be legal? Isn't that going against human's rights to property? What...just what were they thinking? This affects all of us too, because I assume, anyway, that UK residents can take any art from the internet, whether the original owner lives in Europe, Asia, America; anywhere in the world. My art could be out there right now...my friend's art...your art! There would be nothing we could do about it, even if we were lucky enough to discover it. While it's true this was possible before, the fact that it has been made legal somewhere is just appalling. :disbelief: I'll be sure to begin covering all of my posts with watermarks. I work hard to share stuff with people to enjoy...I don't need someone else profiting off of it.

Again, thank you so much for sharing, Lucky. I'm sure there was some sort of logic behind this government decision, but they obviously didn't think it through very well in terms of what it would do to contemporary artists.

From the point of view of a stuffy politician in an expensive suit, allowing the use of images that someone can't find the original owner of is probably a 'brilliant' idea. They don't realise the time and effort taken to produce art. They may not even realise that this is theft because it's "just a pretty picture"? Who knows?

The point should be, of a company wants to use images in a campaign then they should commission and pay for and artist to create the pictures. Not just trawl the internet for images they can't find the original artist of to save money :/

This could put illustrators and artists out of business. Or severely discourage people from becoming professional illustrators in the first place, because the work might just get stolen, and they might not be able to do anything about it!

It would be far simpler and safer for artists if the government just gets rid of this ill-thought-out legislation :/

I live in the UK and was completely unaware of this. Thank for sharing this with me or I never would have known. Quite frankly, our government has been making a lot of bad choices and mistakes, including this one. It's ludicrous! Taking other people's art from the internet and claiming it as your own is the same as me stealing a painting from a gallery and then claiming I created it. They shouldn't allow this in our country.

I sadly can't sign this petition, but if you think about it, images are just like music or movies or some other art forms that when you take them, it's pirating.....
It doesn't make much sense..... o^o

I don't even understand this new thing. q____q

I mean, what made them just decide, "Oh, ok, everyone's art is free to use."?
It really bugs me, since half the time I don't even put a big watermark on my pics.) XD

At first I didn't know if this was just the UK or not, but I guess it isn't. :S

How does that makes sense? Taking someone's art they worked hard for is OK, but downloading movies and music is piracy? We may as well enter a gallery and take something without a word.

Funny thing is Movies and music are art as well. Movies still tell just as much of a story as a single hard worked on picture can give. Same goes for music, if they pass that kind of law and then catch someone and say there stealing because people worked on that..... they have no right to say that.

My point exactly. This is practicly an insult - your art is on the web so it's not worth having the same treatmant as the art that isn't on the web.

I know! It is quite little ridiculous.

It doesn't quite work that way, though. DA has it's own set of rules that members are required to follow. Just because the UK may pass this legislation, doesn't mean that dA won't ban users for art theft (especially since it's headquarters are based in the US).

But yeah, otherwise this is some very scary legislation.

I've signed. Hopefully this will ensure that this ridiculous bit of legislation doesn't go through. I'm usually careful to put watermarks on my work but I don't always manage. And as the sale of my photography is a fairly large part of my income, I don't want someone stealing that.
